Personal Loan Eligibility in South Africa: Top Banks

If you’re considering a personal loan in South Africa, eligibility can vary from one bank to another. Most lenders look at your age, income, employment status, credit profile, existing debt and affordability before deciding whether to approve an application.

Here is a simple comparison of some major banks.

1. FNB Personal Loan

FNB states that applicants must generally be 18 or older, be permanently employed or self-employed, be a permanent South African resident and have their salary paid into a bank account. FNB may also request proof of income and residence depending on your circumstances.

2. Standard Bank Personal Loan

Standard Bank’s term-loan information lists a minimum monthly income of R3,000. Applicants should be at least 18 and may need a valid South African ID, recent proof of residence, a payslip and recent bank statements.

The bank also considers factors such as your credit score, income and ability to afford the repayments.

3. Absa Personal Loan

For an Absa personal loan of 12 months or longer, the bank currently states that you need to be 18 or older, have a regular monthly income of at least R2,000 and have a bank account into which your income is paid.

Absa may require an ID, recent payslips or bank statements and, for non-Absa customers, proof of residence.

4. Capitec Personal Loan

Capitec requires applicants to be 18 or older and have a valid South African ID. Credit decisions are based on your credit profile and affordability. Depending on how you receive your income, you may need your latest salary slip and bank statements showing recent salary deposits.

Capitec says its personal-loan offers can be up to R500,000, but the amount and interest rate you actually qualify for depend on your individual profile and affordability.

5. Nedbank Personal Loan

Nedbank assesses factors including your monthly income, expenses and credit score when determining what loan amount you can afford. A valid South African ID or passport, proof of income and recent bank statements may be required during the application.

What Do Banks Usually Check?

Although requirements differ, you should generally be prepared to provide:

  • Valid South African ID
  • Proof of income
  • Recent bank statements
  • Proof of residence where required
  • Employment or income information
  • Details of existing financial commitments

Your credit history and affordability are particularly important. A higher income does not automatically guarantee approval if your existing expenses and debt obligations leave insufficient room for another repayment.

Before Applying

Don’t compare loans only by the maximum amount advertised. Check the interest rate, initiation fee, monthly service fee, repayment period and total amount payable.

Most importantly, choose a repayment that fits comfortably within your monthly budget. Loan approval, interest rates and amounts are personalised and are not guaranteed.

Note: Bank requirements and loan products can change, so check the lender’s current terms before submitting an application.
